To everyone that is a part of this great project, I want to share with you something significant, actually extraordinary, that has happened. October 16, 2012 was “World Food Day” and in honor of this the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, which was launched last February by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros., pledged to triple any donations they received that day.

We were contacted by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) which is one of the three partners that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. has chosen to be a part of the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign. After having conversations all day long with the IRC we were able to come to agreed upon terms that whatever amount we pledged from the Extraordinary Project would be used to help children in Somalia – our mission.

Once all documentation was in order, we sent our pledge letter to the IRC stating that we would give them $35,000 from the money that we have so far collected. This means that with the commitment from the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, this will now equal a total donation from the Extraordinary Project of $105,000 !!!

The $35,000 will be dedicated to food aid and health clinic programs in Somalia to help children and their mothers. The $70,000 double matching that is being given to the IRC under the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign will be used in accordance with the agreements and arrangements between the IRC and DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. to feed people in the Horn of Africa. The IRC informs us that the programs they are currently running in the Horn of Africa are in refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia and that the people they are feeding in these camps are about 80% from Somalia. So a real win for the Extraordinary Project here too!

And as an added bonus to everything, the President of the IRC has agreed to our request to waive the usual administrative fee of 7% the IRC uses to run their organization. This means that 100% of the $35,000 we pledged will go to the cause of helping children in Somalia.

We continue to be fully open with all of you on everything that is happening in this project.

There is no way to dignify the description of death by starvation. It is neither quick nor painless. Not too long after the food is cut off, the body resorts to fuel reserves in the liver and fatty tissues. Once the fat is all gone, and the person is a skeleton of what he or she once was, the body searches for protein, and finds it in muscle tissue. Even the muscle of the heart is consumed, leaving someone drained and listless.

A drought, not seen in 60 years, compounded with near complete lawlessness and utter disregard for human life has made it so.

It is hard to imagine, but dust and starvation are nearly everywhere you look, and the world’s largest refugee camp is thick with misery on this night. The smell is a combination of the acrid sweetness associated with malnourishment, anxious sweat and diesel fuel.
